When should you worry about dizziness?

The causes of dizziness may be endless, but when you have a problem with your inner ear you have dizziness called vertigo. Compared to other types of dizziness, which makes you feel light-headed,
vertigo makes you feel the world spins around you.

What is Vertigo?

Vertigo is more like a symptom and not a condition. It’s the feeling that you or the items around you start moving around you whenyou aren’t. This feeling may be almost unnoticeable and will not interfere with your life. But it may also be so severe that you’ll find it hard to focus on your everyday tasks.

What about the attacks of vertigo?

They usually develop suddenly and don’t last long, but severe cases are also possible. If it is severe, the symptoms may last for days, making your life extremely difficult. Besides dizziness, vertigo may also cause loss of balance or the feeling of being sick. People with vertigo will find it hard to stand and walk.

Causes of Vertigo

The most common cause of vertigo is balance problems in the inner ear. However, it is also caused by problems in various parts of the brain.

Here are a few causes of vertigo:

Labyrinthitis

This happens when the inner ear balance mechanism gets inflamed. The person with labyrinthitis may also have nausea, mild hearing loss, and vomiting. If you have severe pain in your ear, you should immediately see your doctor.

Ménière's disease

This disease affects the ear of patients from 20-50 years of age. When one has Ménière’s disease,
the symptoms appear suddenly, like attacking the body.

The causes may be:

  • Loss of hearing in one ear
  • Vertigo
  • Tinnitus

Even though the attacks last a few hours, they can be repeated during the day or week or even more.  If you have this disease once, you’ll have these attacks again later. The “good news” is that most people have their second attacks months or even years later.

Once you have such symptoms, you should consult with your doctor. They may scan the ear or ask for some tests. The treatment will depend on the severeness of your symptoms. Although this disease is unpleasant, it isn’t cancerous and won’t cause any issues with your nerve system.

Other causes of vertigo:

  • Blood Circulation

If you don’t have enough blood flowing to your brain, you will feel light-headed and even faint.
The causes include low blood pressure, anaemia, anxiety, medications, irregular heart rhythm.

  • Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV)

Here your head movements will trigger vertigo.

  • Vestibular neuronitis

Inflammation of this nerve, which is located in your inner ear and helps to control the balance
by sending messages to your brain.

How can you help yourself?

No matter what causes vertigo, you can relieve your symptoms doing the following steps:

  • Simple exercises
  • Sleeping with head slightly raised on 2+ pillows
  • Getting up slowly out of bed
  • Not bending down to pick up things
  • Not extending your neck

Remember that self-care is crucial for your health, but you should consult your doctor before doing anything related to your health. Otherwise, the symptoms may become severe instead of disappearing.
